Carphone's Talk Talk scores 20,000 users for “free” broadband

Carphone Warehouse's landline firm announces impressive sign up figures for new service

Carphone Warehouse’s landline subsidiary Talk Talk had signed up 20,000 subscribers by the end of yesterday for its highly publicised broadband tariff, the firm said.

The much-hyped launch offers an 8Mbit/s link for UK users in 70 percent of the country so long as they sign up for the firm’s Talk 3 tariff with free national and international calling to 28 countries.

Although there are caveats such as a one-off connection fee of £29.99 and £11 per month line rental, the offer seems to have had a good start.

Talk Talk’s broadband deal had 1,000 users by 1pm, Tuesday, the day of its launch. It had also received about 4,800 phone calls and saw traffic of about 40,000 hits per minute on its web site.
