Dewars rolls out barrel monitoring system

Scheme is part of moving all barrels in-house

Distiller Dewars is installing a wireless infrastructure to locate and manage its
1.3 million casks of whisky.

The investment is part of a storage strategy that includes building 25 new warehouses and improved tracking of the firm’s whisky blends.

The new system will build a 3D model of all storage locations each containing 72,000 tightly-stacked casks to allow staff to know exactly where each barrel is kept, and to manage the casks so that those needed are easily accessible.

“We now know more accurately which casks are ready when so we can get them out of the door much faster,” said Dewars IT manager John McKee.
