HTC P3600i (GSM Quadband) Handheld - Review

One of the most popular handhelds, the Dopod D810 is a hot favorite with Windows Mobile users. In this review we'll basically highlight the differences between the old Dopod D810 and the new P3600i.

Design

In terms of design it is exactly like the black HTC P3600. It's black, it's compact, and still weighs the same at 150g. The only difference between the two models that can help distinguish between the two models are two HTC logos, emblazoned across the top left corner and on the battery cover of the P3600i.

Similarly, on its base is a single mini-USB jack, the only connector on the entire device. This means you have to use an adapter to connect an ordinary set of stereo headphones or go wireless with Bluetooth stereo.

Operating System (OS)

P3600i: Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) Professional
D810: Although it started shipping with Windows Mobile 5.0, HTC later upgraded it to WM6, so no difference between the two models on this front too.

HTC P3600i (GSM Quadband) Handheld - Back and the CameraProcessor

P3600i: 500MHz Samsung processor
D810: 400MHz Samsung processor

With a faster processor, the P3600i responds faster to screen taps, and there were hardly any slowdowns even when we tried running multiple applications in the background.

Flash Memory

P3600i: 256MB
D810: 128MB

The doubling of Flash Memory gives more space for data storage and applications.

RAM

P3600i: 64MB
D810: 64MB

Unfortunately, there has been no upgrade to the RAM size. More RAM would have improved performance as there would be more space to store temporary application data while programs were running. On the flipside, more RAM would consume more power, so doubling it to 128MB will significantly affect the device's battery life.

Connectivity

Connectivity options remain the same with HSDPA, GPS for navigation, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. And like the D810, no GPS maps are bundled with the P3600i.

Performance

It still managed to last for over two days on a single charge using its 1,500mAh battery. The rated talktime for the P3600i is 5 hours for GSM and 4 hours for WCDMA.

Bottomline

The faster processor and increased flash memory do not warrant an upgrade for someone already using a D810. But for those looking for a new compact PDA-phone, this is one that will satisfy almost all feature needs.

The P3600i will replace D810, which will no longer be shipped by HTC, though you might still find unsold stock in stores. In Singapore, it retails for S$1228, S$70 less than the D810 at launch.
