Lack of development to blame, says Andrew Morton

Linux maintainer Andrew Morton has told a conference in Germany that the Linux kernel has "too many bugs".

Speaking at the LinuxTag 2006 conference in Wiesbaden, Morton warned that drastic steps need to be taken to reduce the number of defects in the open source operating system.

He claimed that the problem has become widespread because so few developers are working to fix problems, and that he may have to devote an entire upgrade to sorting out the bugs.

Morton also suggested that the lack of development is affecting old systems and legacy peripherals.

Linux kernel developers do not care about integrating items that are not sold any more, according to Morton, even if those peripherals are still in widespread use.
