April sales date leads to installation in May
Sky will officially begin signing up users to its high-definition television service on 12 April.
The satellite broadcasting company said that it does not yet have any figures for the expected number of users at launch, which is slated for May.
"I can say that tens of thousands of people have pre-registered for Sky HD, but cannot give you a figure for pre-orders at this stage," a spokeswoman for Sky said.
The company had previously announced that the Sky HD box to access the service will cost £299, plus a £10 monthly subscription on top of viewers' existing TV package costs.
The Sky HD box includes 160GB of storage space, which will record around 30 hours of HD programmes or 80 hours of standard-quality.
Sky will offer a free standard installation for Sky HD until 31 May or until stocks last.
