Samsung ramps up 1Gb 70nm Flash production

Electronics giant claims memory is 60 per cent faster

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has begun mass producing 70nm 1Gb OneNAND high-speed Flash memory.

The Korean giant said that the higher-speed memory is targeted at a wide range of applications, including mobile handsets, memory cards for digital cameras and hybrid hard disk drives.

OneNAND has a sustained read speed of 108Mbps, which Samsung claims is 60 per cent faster than previous 90nm OneNAND devices.

The 70nm OneNAND supports a synchronous clock frequency of 83MHz, and offers compatibility with the clock frequencies of a wide range of mobile products.

According to the firm, 70nm OneNAND fuses the rapid boot-up and data-read functions of NOR Flash memory, while adding the high-capacity data storage and fast writing capabilities of Nand.

The 70nm device is now designed into "well over 100 mobile products" including digital cameras, set-top boxes and digital TVs.

Samsung unveiled a high-speed memory card equipped with OneNAND at the third annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum last month.

The company predicts OneNAND sales to reach $1bn in 2008 and soar above $1.5bn by 2010.
