One million to switch on HDTV in UK by 2007

Research firm predicts bright future for next-gen TV

An estimated 800,000 to one million adults in the UK will buy HDTV (High Definition Television) sets over the next year, according to new figures from Continental Research.

Jon Beaumont, director at Continental, estimated that of the UK population aware of HDTV, two per cent already own HDTV, seven per cent claim to be 'very interested' and 36 per cent 'quite interested'.

"Potentially one million converts to HDTV will certainly please the manufacturers at such an early stage in its evolution," said Beaumont.

Continental also found that 66 per cent of all respondents to the survey were aware of HDTV, and awareness was higher among men (77 per cent), 35-54 year olds (72 per cent) and those working full time (71 per cent).

An overwhelming 71 per cent of respondents chose 'clearer picture' as the main perceived benefit of the technology. Other benefits remain of secondary value to most people.

A significant 57 per cent of the respondents who were aware of HDTV were unaware that new HD equipment was required to watch HD television programmes. Only 41 per cent were aware of the requirement.

"It is likely that this lack of knowledge about equipment requirements will prove a barrier to some in purchasing an HDTV screen," said Beaumont.

"They will also require HDTV-ready digital set-top boxes that are likely to be priced at a premium in the initial stages of HDTV broadcasting."
