Nokia boosts mobile applications

New Mobility Hosting system will help service providers roll out new applications

Nokia will today launch a Mobility Hosting system to make it easier for telcos and service providers to roll out new mobile services and applications.

The move will let new entrants take a “try it and see” approach to find out which mobile apps buyers like. It also opens up new delivery channels and may drive down charges by encouraging greater competition.

With the exception of email and text messaging, mobile apps have largely failed to take off with corporate buyers. But analysts predict growing smartphone sales could encourage providers to test systems such as push-to-talk and location-aware apps.

Nokia’s service also lets new providers buy in to the types of communications and billing systems used by the established mobile operators.
