Illegal software row escalates

Second Microsoft partner comes forward

A second Microsoft VAR has come forward and alleged that the software giant has demanded unfair damages for counterfeit software.

CRN reported last month (CRN, 27 March) that Microsoft demanded £20,000 damages from a reseller for software purchased from Stormtech Distribution in 2003. Microsoft agreed a settlement with Stormtech in 2004.

The second VAR, which asked to remain anonymous, told CRN: “We purchased software from Stormtech and later received a letter from Microsoft asking for huge amounts of money, but without any detailed proof. We decided it was foolish to take on Microsoft ourselves, so we’ve left the matter in the hands of our legal advisors.”

Michala Alexander, head of anti-piracy at Microsoft, said: “It is the responsibility of the VAR, not Microsoft, to ensure that it is using legitimate software.”
