ATI launches first 1GB card

Vendor launches high-end chip with 1GB of double data rate memory

The world’s first graphics card with 1GB of memory has been unveiled by ATI Technologies.

The FireGL V7350 is an ‘ultra high-end’ card featuring 1GB of graphics double data rate 3 memory. It will cost about £1,100. The card also comes in a 512MB edition, the FireGL V7300, which will cost about £900. Based on 90-nanometer process technology, the cards use a 512bit ring bus memory architecture, and are targeted at CAD, digital content creation and imaging professionals who work with large datasets.

According to ATI, the high clock rates of the new cards, combined with full 128bit precision and high levels of parallel processing, produce a floating point processing power that is seven times faster than a 3GHz Pentium processor. The cards also feature ATI’s Avivo video and display enhancing technology for improving visual fidelity in the professional graphics market. It offers automatic gain control, gamma correction and increased colour bit depth.

The cards also have a 10bit-per-red-green-blue (RGB) component graphics pipeline. This boosts the colour palette to more than a billion colours, resulting in finer detail. Both cards cater for high-end displays supporting 16bit-per-RGB colour.

Dinesh Sharma, director of workstation products at ATI, said: “ATI’s new ultra high-end workstation graphics accelerators leverage our best technology while focusing on the features of the workstation market.

“With the release of the workstation industry’s first 1GB board we have coupled increased visual fidelity with the power to drive extremely large data sets.”

Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research, said: “ATI has made tremendous strides in its market position over the past year. It’s done that by zeroing in on features and pricing that resonate with professional users. This latest foray into the ultra high-end market gives it a complete top to bottom offering. It will solidify its position as a leader in workstation graphics.”

Workstation integrators that will build systems that feature the new cards include Voodoo PC, Alienware, Boxx, Monarch Computer Systems, Omnitech, Polywell, Systemax and Velocity Micro.
