Air transport sector gets IT security standard

Benchmark intended to bolster security within the industry

A security benchmark is being created to measure the reliability and maturity of information security infrastructures within the air transport industry (ATI).

SITA, the IT service provider to the air industry is working with consultant INS to compile a standards-based industry benchmark based on a series of TrustCheck assessments.

TrustCheck will determine airlines information security capability by reviewing security documentation, processes and through structured interviews.

‘The impetus has come from ourselves and the industry. We need to be proactive in terms of security as the ATI has 24 by seven mission critical systems and we need to ensure that security is always on the mind,’ said Dan Ebbinghaus, vice president and general manager of professional services at SITA.

Ebbinghaus believes it is imperative for the aviation industry to take security to the next level because of the highly sensitive nature of its data and an escalating threat from hackers.

‘Even the most robust systems are vulnerable to someone who has a malicious intent and really wants to get in. Internal systems contain critical information such as passenger data used from a screening point of view. The industry must think more deeply around security standards,’ he said.

The TrustCheck programme has been rolled out to four customers to date and there are up to 25 more in the pipeline.

‘Once we get a critical mass of around 20, we will be able to get representative data and useful benchmarks which will allow the industry to make comparisons,’ said Ebbinghaus.
