PC maker Acer launches new products and talks up plan for market domination
Acer has unveiled a raft of new products and disclosed plans to grab a larger share of the worldwide PC market by working more closely with reseller partners.
Speaking at the launch of its new products, including 3G-enabled laptops, Acer president Gianfranco Lanci said there was “a big opportunity to grow” in countries such as the UK and France.
Although less well-known in the enterprise market than rivals such as Dell and HP, Acer said it is now the third largest laptop supplier in Europe after these two, pushing Toshiba into fourth place.
The company said it will implement several channel programmes during 2006 to help resellers deliver what customers want. One of these, the executive partner programme, will target corporate customers.
Among the new products Acer unveiled were laptops with integrated 3G connectivity, enabling mobile staff to access email and corporate resources from almost anywhere.
The TravelMate 4260 and consumer-oriented Aspire 5650 will ship in May. As with other 3G-enabled laptops, Vodafone provides network access, and coverage drops back to GPRS when out of 3G range.
Acer said that the 3G capability of the two laptops could be upgraded to faster HSDPA technology in future, enabling connection speeds up to 1.4Mbit/s.
“Integrated 3G will give you broadband functionality anywhere you can get 3G coverage,” said James Harvey, Acer’s UK product manager for laptops.
The TravelMate 4260 is based on Intel Core Duo mobile chips up to 2.1GHz and with memory up to 2GB. It is available with either a 15in or 15.4in screen and weighs from 2.73kg. Prices for the TravelMate 4260 start at £949.
Also due to ship in May is a new thin-and-light TravelMate, the 3020. This has a 12.1in widescreen display, an external DVD SuperMulti drive, and ships with Acer’s Bluetooth voice over IP (VoIP) handset.
Other new products include a 20in laptop, the Aspire 9800, and the flagship TravelMate 8200, which boasts a carbon fibre casing.
