Welsh utility installs new IT system

New infrastructure to support transfer of customer records

Wales & West Utilities (WWU) is building a new IT infrastructure to aid its takeover of the gas network in Wales and south-west England from National Grid.

Indian software development firm Wipro is creating the new IT system and helping the transfer of 7.4 million customer records and data about 34,000km of pipes and other assets.

Chris Boughton, WWU’s transform training manager, says the company was given 18 months to extract records on customers and assets, and create an IT system independent of National Grid when the takeover occurred last June.

‘The sale has given us the chance to look at world-class best practice. Before, we had 55 front-office systems. We removed unnecessary duplication and reduced that to something less than 10 systems,’ he said.

The utility is establishing a central SAP system for asset management and integrating scheduling software to control its field force of around 900 people.

WWU is also paying rent to National Grid for continued use of its systems, and will gain substantial cost savings from early completion of the transfer.

Boughton says a full and complete transfer of information is critical to the future of WWU.
