Mobile video to be worth $500m by 2010

Analysts predict strong growth over the next four years

The growing demand for mobile video will generate $501m in revenue by 2010 in the US alone, up from $62m in 2005, market watchers predicted today.

According to a JupiterResearch report, over 40 per cent of mobile phone users are interested in some form of video service on their mobile phone.

The analyst firm noted that the adoption of mobile video on phones has been somewhat low with only two per cent of mobile phone users claiming a subscription.

However, a recent JupiterResearch poll of mobile subscribers found that 17 per cent were interested in watching 'live' TV on their mobile phones, while 11 per cent indicated an interest in short video clips.

"This consumer interest bodes well for the mobile industry as vendors use different business models to try and tap into this demand," said Julie Ask, research director at JupiterResearch.

"The challenge is finding the correct mix of premium content and price points that is lacking in today's offerings."

Longer term adoption will depend more on business models and content offerings than on the technology or devices, added David Schatsky, senior vice president of research at JupiterResearch.

"Our research shows strong interest in mobile video, but consumers are just not interested in paying large fees for mediocre content," he said.
