The EC says rules are needed to bring down costs to end-users
The European Commission is to propose regulations for mobile phone roaming charges next week, in a bid to get operators to cut their charges.
Roaming charges are added to mobile phone bills as a fee for switching between different operators. It is estimated that they account for between 15 and 20 percent of mobile phone company profits. The EC will seek to end this “profiteering” through a range of legislation.
Reaching a decision is not likely to be easy. This week the GSM Association, a mobile industry group, cancelled a meeting with EC commissioner Viviane Reding, during which they were due to discuss her drive to cut mobile phone charges.
The EC will present its proposals to the public next week, and then leave them open to discussion and feedback during a consultation period.
