App development specialist Compuware releases new version of its OptimalJ development suite

Application development specialist Compuware has announced version 4.1 of its OptimalJ development suite at the EclipseCon conference. The new version reinforces Compuware's commitment to the open-source Eclipse framework for software development tools.

Edwin Schumacher, director of OptimalJ product development at Compuware, said the new version has important additions. "First, we are moving more of the product to the Eclipse framework," Schumacher said. Compuware began this migration last year when it moved the entry-level OptimalJ Developer Edition 4.0 to Eclipse.

"OptimalJ Professional Edition 4.1 is now on the Eclipse framework, though we also support the NetBeans framework – from that perspective OptimalJ is unique, "

Schumacher added. "Professional allows you to model, and from that model generate an app. It also implements a programmatic model driven architecture [MDA]." At the end of this year the third member of the OptimalJ suite, the Architecture Edition, is expected to move to the Eclipse framework.

The second big development in 4.1 is a new feature to improve change management. "Managers want to see what areas would be affected by a change and how much of the app would be changed," said Schumacher. "This enables them to make better decisions. For example, if you introduce a new requirement you want to see how that will change the application, the architecture and the code. We have made the connection from requirements to models, and from the models to the code." So from a piece of code, managers can trace the models it belongs to, and the original requirements.

Compuware has also beefed up support for Unified Modeling Language (UML) tools. "We have set up a partnership with No Magic, and we bundle an option for customers to buy No Magic's MagicDraw UML modeling tool for use with OptimalJ," said Schumacher.

Version 4.1 is available now. The OptimalJ Developer Edition costs £475, the Professional Edition £4,625 per developer and the Architecture Edition £13,875 per developer.
