AOL touts remote access suite

Link2PC offers full web-based remote control

AOL has launched a premium service allowing users to remotely access and control their PCs from any other internet-connected PC.

Link2PC creates a virtual desktop that mirrors the view of the desktop on the user's own machine.

The user can interact with the virtual desktop as if they were sitting at their own computer to use programs, open and edit documents, or access, share and print files, AOL said.

Strong encryption and two-level password validation help protect users' security, alongside functionality allowing users to select which programs are available remotely. Link2PC costs $6.95 a month for up to two host computers.

After registration, users download a small program on each machine for which they need remote access.

The next stage is to visit the Link2PC.com website to create a virtual desktop of their shared computers via an encrypted, password-protected connection.

"Link2PC untethers the desktop computer in a simple and secure manner," said Ed Fish, senior vice president for AOL premium and subscription services.

"Traditionally these kinds of products were developed solely for 'road warrior' business travellers, and many required an instruction manual to operate.

"In the past year we've seen a strong desire by mainstream consumers, small office/home office users, and traditional business travellers to use this kind of functionality.

"Consumers may need to access a presentation they left at work, share photos saved on their home PC, or find information from their address book or calendar.

"Business executives can access all of the documents and programs from their work computer without lugging around a heavy laptop and lots of cables."
