Two US bodies join forces to explore technology challenges of convergence

The Wi-Fi Alliance and the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) are joining forces to set up certification programmes for converged mobile and Wi-Fi handsets.

The two groups plan to develop test programmes for the overlapping aspects of converged Wi-Fi and mobile phones.

"The initial focus of this cooperation will be on radio frequency performance mapping in a mixed network environment," said a joint statement.

"Future work will explore other technology challenges of convergence, such as handover between cellular and Wi-Fi networks, cross-radio signal sensitivity and battery life."

The agreement came about following close ties between the two groups since early 2005.

"As more converged phones become available, and carriers announce plans to support convergence, cross-industry collaboration becomes critical to address pressing technological challenges," said Wi-Fi Alliance managing director Frank Hanzlik.

Hanzik claimed that the CTIA had a proven track record for developing test programmes that have been embraced by mobile carriers.

Robert Mesirow, vice president of operations at the CTIA, added: "The Wi-Fi Alliance has significant expertise in unlicensed wireless technology and developing certification programmes that address end-user expectations.

"By combining our knowledge bases we can ensure that carriers and subscribers alike have the best possible experience with converged devices."

The market for Wi-Fi/mobile handsets will reach 100 million units annually by 2009, according to analyst firm ABI Research.
